Extractions are a physical means of removing a build up of oil, dirt and skin within a pore or area of the skin. Extractions are commonly indicated for blackheads, small pustules and milia. Tools such as a hyfrecator or comedone extractor may be used.

To perform an extraction your practitioner will follow strict infection control and hygiene protocols. Gloves will be worn and the skin is cleansed well to remove any makeup and surface oils, skin build up or product prior to commencement of the treatment.

Depending on the extraction indicated and area to be treatment; a topical anaesthetic agent may be applied prior to commencement. A tool such as a comedone extractor or hyfrecator can be used to assist in the removal process.

Following treatment, after care will be advised by your Skinfluence including what to expect and how to care for the treated area.

Pre and post care

Minimal to no down time is expected after an extraction treatment. There might be some slightly tenderness in areas that have been treated and crusting may be evident.

Immediately after an Extraction treatment:

  • If a comedone extractor was used, mild redness and/or transient swelling in the area can be present.
  • If a hyfrecator was used, more prominent redness and transient swelling will be present.

7-10 days following treatment:

  • Comedone extractions will settle very quickly and will reveal a happy, less congested appearance to the skin.
  • If a hyfrecator was used, micro-crusting can be present from around day two and may persist until day seven. This is not always the case and varies on an individual basis.
  • Active ingredients should be avoided up until 10 days post treatment.
  • 24 hours: excessive exercise, hot showers, sauna use or exposure to dirty/dusty environments.
  • 2-5 days: anti-acne skin cares, topical vitamin A (retinols)
  • 1 week: shaving or hair trimming.
  • 2 weeks: exfoliating products (AHA, BHA ingredients, scrubs), waxing, plucking or depilatory use. Sun exposure.
